Artist John Guarneri has been commissioned to colorize a portrait of Mr. Cartwright Sr. drawn by Harold Willard, a native veteran who served in the Navy, that will be displayed on the wall of the Borough Hall of Somerville, New Jersey.

At the time the portrait was taken, it was a Celebration Dance for Native American Heritage Month during the first week of November 5th, 2022. Bart’s attendance at the Celebration Dance was to promote awareness of the Indigenous people and let the public know, “WE ARE STILL HERE!”

Mr. Cartwright Sr. stated that his portrait being artistically portrayed was humbling. His illustration will portray Lenape culture once it is completed and displayed on the Wall of the Borough Hall of Somerville, NJ. Barton is grateful for the opportunity to represent this great Nation through tradition and to spread the history of Lenapehoking.

Barton Cartwright Sr. resides along the Delaware River across from Trenton, New Jersey, in Yardley, Pennsylvania; The Lenape ancestral homelands.

Wanìshi for the incredible contributions Mr. Cartwright Sr. has made to establishing Lenape cultural awareness!

Delaware Nation is proud to announce that as of December 2022, we have officially re-established our Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) status with the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior. The National Park Service (NPS) Tribal Historic Preservation Program reviews and approves applications from federally recognized tribes to establish THPOs under Section 101 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and enters into Memoranda of Agreement with approved tribes. Katelyn Lucas initiated this process on behalf of Delaware Nation’s historic preservation office last year, and President Deborah Dotson has now signed our MOA confirming Delaware Nation’s ability to assume THPO responsibilities. Katelyn Lucas has been named Delaware Nation’s tribal historic preservation officer who will, along with historic preservation director Carissa Speck, continue the tribe’s efforts to identify and protect historic and cultural resources in Lenape homelands and across our states of interest along Delaware Nation’s forced removal pathway.

As pollutants are put into our atmosphere, the ozone layer depletes. This decreases our natural protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In other words, more pollution, more sunburn. UV radiation can cause major health problems that can last longer after the sunburn disappears. Skin cancer, premature aging, damages to the eyes such as cataracts, and immune system suppression are all health effects related to prolonged sun exposure. The two major types of skin cancer related to UV radiation or sun/tanning bed exposure is melanoma and non-melanoma. Melanoma accounts for more than 75% of skin cancer deaths. The two most common, non-melanoma cancers are Basal Cell Carcinomas (tumors that do NOT spread) and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (tumors that DO spread). To protect your skin, please wear protective clothing, such as hats and shirts that cover your skin, and at least SPF 30 sunscreen. Even if you do not look or feel sunburned, UV radiation is penetrating your skin while you are exposed to sunlight or tanning beds. EPA has a UV Index calculator so that you can see the UV index in your area and can protect yourself and family from harmful prolonged UV radiation.

https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety/uv-index-1

Once at the website, enter your zip code. The website will bring up a hyperlink that shows the UV index in your area. On 7/11/2022 for Anadarko, Oklahoma, it is “Very High” (UV INDEX: 10) and protection from the sun is needed. It is suggested to protect yourself by wearing appropriate clothing, hats, shades, and SPF 30 sunscreen. It is also suggested to seek shade and limit sun exposure from 10am to 4pm. On 7/11/2022 for North Pole, Alaska, it is “Moderate” (UV INDEX 4) and suggests to wear sunscreen and seek shade during midday hours if needed for extra protection.
