Artist John Guarneri has been commissioned to colorize a portrait of Mr. Cartwright Sr. drawn by Harold Willard, a native veteran who served in the Navy, that will be displayed on the wall of the Borough Hall of Somerville, New Jersey.

At the time the portrait was taken, it was a Celebration Dance for Native American Heritage Month during the first week of November 5th, 2022. Bart’s attendance at the Celebration Dance was to promote awareness of the Indigenous people and let the public know, “WE ARE STILL HERE!”

Mr. Cartwright Sr. stated that his portrait being artistically portrayed was humbling. His illustration will portray Lenape culture once it is completed and displayed on the Wall of the Borough Hall of Somerville, NJ. Barton is grateful for the opportunity to represent this great Nation through tradition and to spread the history of Lenapehoking.

Barton Cartwright Sr. resides along the Delaware River across from Trenton, New Jersey, in Yardley, Pennsylvania; The Lenape ancestral homelands.

Wanìshi for the incredible contributions Mr. Cartwright Sr. has made to establishing Lenape cultural awareness!

The Schoenmakers saw Lenape artifacts with their eyes on the land where Patty’s ancestors once thrived. Witnessing the Historic Preservation extension office of the Museum and discovering rich heritage made this trip for the Schoenmakers one for the books!

ANADARKO, OK — Local guests of Anadarko and the surrounding area joined together to celebrate the 2022 Bigfoot Storytelling Event at the beautiful Randlett Park. A massive turnout of Bigfoot believers arrived with smiles and good cheer! Guests even got to see Bigfoot in person! The event began at 3:00 PM on a mild Friday afternoon with Delaware Nation staff and vendors ready to serve.

Families and friends gathered and posed for photos with the giant-footed legend. If guests weren’t snapping photos with Bigfoot, they were probably enjoying one of the many great activities, such as bounce houses, pumpkin painting, t-shirts, face painting, cake walk, cornhole, hayrides, Bigfoot calling contest, health walk, costume contests, kettle corn, scavenger hunt, refreshments, macro fishing, and much more, along with many booths filled with beautiful jewelry, artifacts, and useful information! Congratulations to all the winners of the Bigfoot Calling Contest and to the winners of the Kids Costume Contests. The costumes were amazing! Their hard work and attention to detail paid off.

On May 13th, 2022, the Delaware Nation flag was raised at City Hall in Allentown Pennsylvania for the first time in the city’s history. The Mayor of Allentown, Matt Tuerk, also declared May 13th to be Delaware Nation Day in the city. On May 14th, 2022, the Mayor of Allentown came to the Museum of Indian Culture to dedicate the Lenape Trail Project. The Lenape Trail Project was an educational signage project originally designed to engage visitors of the scenic Parkway surrounding the Little Lehigh Creek near the museum in learning more about the origins of the Lenape people whose homelands they’re standing on; where the Lenape Tribal Nations are today; what traditional Lenape fishing, hunting, and trade practices looked like; and how to identify plants and wildlife Native to Lenape homelands, which still thrive in this region today. Delaware Nation, the Museum of Indian Culture, and Allentown Parks and Recreation collaborated to create and install the educational signage for the Lenape Trail last spring thanks to a Lehigh County grant. The dedication of the trail was postponed due to COVID, but this year we were finally able to celebrate this achievement, and unveil a new digital “Tour and Explore” experience added to the trail through the museum’s partnership with PBS. This new interactive component of the trail features 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native from the PBS KIDS program MOLLY OF DENALI ®. Speakers at the dedication included Delaware Nation President Deborah Dotson, Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk, Delaware Nation citizens Jack Johnson and Bart Cartwright, Delaware Nation’s historic preservation assistant Katelyn Lucas, Museum of Indian Culture Director Pat Rivera, and PBS representative Amber Emory. The event closed with a tree planting ceremony led by Bart Cartwright.

ANADARKO, OK — Mission Elementary teams up with Delaware Nation Environmental Programs to educate students on the benefits of replacing plastic water bottles with a cleaner, reusable, alternative solution; Metal Eco Warrior water bottles!

Student Support Coordinator Cherica Eckiwaudah was concerned about the number of plastic water bottles used by students. She reached out to Delaware Nation Environmental Programs to provide this educational and informational opportunity.

Environmental Programs Director Jaclyn McCasland presented an interactive slideshow presentation for the students to view while they ate their lunch. Jackie provided reasons why plastic water bottles are less beneficial to us and the environment. Students were allowed to interact by answering questions and providing engaging responses.

Jackie reiterated the fact that stainless steel water bottles are better for you. Why? According to Jackie’s educational presentation, stainless steel water bottles help you avoid BPA, they don’t contain other harmful chemicals, keep mold and other bacteria at bay, are sustainable, require fewer resources and less energy, don’t retain flavors, and tap water tastes better than bottled, they keep your water hot or cold for longer, they’re cheaper and convenient. Environmental Programs provided enough water bottles for the students at Mission to encourage ditching plastic water bottle habits.

Delaware Nation would like to thank the Mission Elementary teaching staff that coordinated with Environmental Programs in making this event a tremendous success! Wanìshi!
